How Does CoolSculpting Work?

The observation that fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues led Harvard scientists to develop cryolipolysis–the controlled application of cooling to break down fat cells. This formed the basis of CoolSculpting.

This FDA-cleared treatment safely utilizes precisely controlled cooling to target exercise-resistant fat deposits. These fat cells freeze, break down, and are naturally flushed away by the body (see video). Since fat cells freeze at a higher temperature that other cells, the surrounding tissues are left unharmed. On average, patients achieve up to a 25% reduction in the treated fat with a single treatment.

Procedure Overview

To begin your CoolSculpting Elite procedure, a special gel pad is applied to the targeted area of fat to protect your skin and evenly distribute the cooling. The cooling device is pressed against the treatment area, and it delivers cold energy to the fat cells. You will feel an intense cold sensation initially, but the area will soon become numb.

Typically, patients feel little to no discomfort throughout the treatment. Patients often read magazines, check emails, or even nap. After the tissue has been precisely cooled for a carefully calculated period of time, you can to return to your normal daily activities.

What is the recovery like after CoolSculpting Elite?

Because CoolSculpting does not require anesthesia or incisions, no recovery period is needed. In 3 days, as your fat cells begin to respond, you might experience mild soreness. However, you can return to your regular routine after the procedure. Within a few days, any minimal redness should be gone.

How long does it take for results to show?

Because CoolSculpting relies on your body’s own processes, the benefits usually are visible within 2 to 4 months.

How long do CoolSculpting Elite results last?
