What’s New

Research into breast cancer prevention and treatment is continuously ongoing, and the same is true for breast reconstruction methods. Our surgeons have at their disposal several methods to reconstruct the breast, including the use of breast implants or autologous methods (using a patient’s own tissue). It is now possible in many cases to have breast reconstruction performed immediately following mastectomy, and “delayed” methods of reconstruction also continue to advance so that they are less invasive and require less downtime. Our surgeons are happy to discuss the options available and a recommended approach in conjunction with your cancer surgeon.

Procedure Overview

Methods available for breast reconstruction include:

  • Flap Tissue: This method of breast reconstruction uses a patient’s living tissue from areas such as the abdomen or back to reconstruct the breast.
  • Tissue Expansion: This method uses a tissue expander to expand the skin over time, creating adequate tissue to cover and contain a silicone gel or saline breast implant similar to breast augmentation in Westchester County or New York City.

During your consultation with your breast surgeon at our New York practice, you will discuss which method can provide you with your desired outcome. Sometimes multiple reconstructive surgeries are necessary to achieve your desired results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can breast reconstruction be performed during my mastectomy?

Many women have the option to have their breast reconstruction performed at the time of their mastectomy. It is important to discuss with your surgeon before your mastectomy so that you can make an informed decision.

How is the nipple reconstructed?

Nipple reconstruction is typically performed as a separate procedure. The areola and nipple are often removed during a mastectomy, but can be reconstructed. A nipple mound can be created using your own chest tissue, and the areola is re-created through a tattoo that matches the color of the areola on your other breast.

Is my breast reconstruction covered by insurance?

Your breast reconstruction procedure should be covered by your insurance. For more information about insurance for breast reconstruction, read about the 1998 Federal Breast Reconstruction Law at the ASPS Web site.
