Because they are often referred to as “chemical peels,” some worry that the name means the treatment involves dangerous substances and plenty of pain. On the contrary, our aesthetician assures you that peels are extremely safe and not painful.

What Chemical Peels Treat

Types of Chemical Peels

Peels fit into one of three main categories:

• Light peels focus on more superficial problems and will often need to be repeated in multiple sessions to get the desired effect. The good news is that the downtime is practically nonexistent.
• Medium peels go deeper and require more downtime, and can only be repeated every six months to a year.
• Deep peels can reach all the way to the lower middle layer of skin and are much more intense. You may be put under anesthesia for a deep peel. Although the results will be the most dramatic, people with certain medical needs and skin types may not be suitable for this specific treatment. After reviewing your medical history and medications, your aesthetician will be able to tell you whether a deep peel is appropriate for you.

Preparation

Ahead of your chemical peel, you should avoid sun exposure and stop using certain kinds of topical ointments, as outlined by the aesthetician. Make sure your body does not have any existing infections or open wounds, as a chemical peel will aggravate those issues.

Treatment Details

When you arrive, our team will clean your skin to remove any natural oils. After making sure your hair and eyes are protected, we meticulously apply the peel solution to the area being treated. The formula will feel hot and sting but should not be too uncomfortable. The aesthetician will wash the chemical compound off once the treatment is complete.

Chemical Peel Recovery

The timeline of your recovery will obviously depend on whether you chose a light, medium or deep peel. Although your skin may feel uncomfortable for some time, do not scratch it, as that could increase your risk for infection. You can expect that your skin will be red and irritated for anywhere from a few days to two weeks, depending on the grade of the peel, before it starts to flake off.

After your skin has healed, it is important to wear sunscreen and moisturizer every day. Avoid tanning — including outdoors — to protect the skin. Follow all of your aftercare instructions to best prevent any infections or complications.
